KAYAK: Advanced : Winter Paddler : Orchard Beach & Hart Island

Orchard Beach & Hart Island

We'll be launching from Orchard Beach in the Bronx, and taking a tour of Hart Island , a site where a million New Yorkers have been buried in common graves since the 1800s! 

The trip will take us under the Throgs Neck & Whitestone Bridges (which I understand are much prettier from the water than from traffic above).   The bridges are our gateway to the East River. Once past them, we'll be paddling "downhill" with the ebb back to Queens Landing.

There are logistics we need to finalize, but the plan is drive up to Orchard Beach with our boats and paddle home.  We'll celebrate our long day with some refreshments at QL on return.  Please be aware that this will be about 6 hours of paddling ( 20 miles ). 

  • Skill level: Advanced (see what this means here)
  • Launch Kayaks at Orchard Beach: 8:30am
  • Return & Release: 3:30pm

What to bring?

  • Winter paddle gear ( dry suit, gloves, booties, hat )
  • Packed lunch / snacks
  • Lots of water!

Registrants will need to have Winter Paddler training ( the next class is Nov 9th at 6:30pm ).  Also be sure to upgrade your club membership to "Winter Paddler".
