KAYAK: Intermediate: On-water Volunteer Training

  • Registering as a Kayak Paddler. Make sure you've been assessed for the skill level of this trip before registering.
  • Only select this if you have been assessed as a NBCB Kayak Trip Assistant.

Trip Assistant and Deckhand Training Workshop

If you are an intermediate kayaker and have time to kayak a few times a month, learn the skills necessary to volunteer on kayak trips. Get out on the water more, help at Public Paddles and assist trip leaders.

A few of the skills you'll learn are:

  • How to make a radio call on the water

  • Rescue protocols / Incident management

  • Practice taking the group/leading for a short distance

  • Paddle to Anable Basin and practice towing

  • Review ferries and other commercial traffic

  • Choosing kayaks & gear for others

  • At the dock protocols


  • Skill level: Intermediate(see what this means here)
  • Meet:  11 AM  sharp at Manhattan Avenue Street-End Park
  • Launch Kayaks: Noon
  • Slack:1:45 PM and the Ebb begins
  • Return: 3 PM to kayak launch
  • Release:3:30  PM

Dress to get wet, bring water, a snack, etc. Avoid jeans or other heavy cotton clothing.
