This class is for members of NBCB. There is no formal prerequisite. You just need to be independent, ready to have fun, follow instructions and get wet. Also, it is free of charge. Our club will provide you the kayak, paddle, and PFD. However, you can bring your own gear. You will learn the basics of kayak touring equipment, weather conditions, strokes and rescues (wet exit). You don’t have to be a member of the American Canoe Association (ACA), but to receive skills assessment credentials from ACA, you need to be current ACA member (read below).

For further information, check out ACA Level 2: Essentials of Kayak Touring

The training class will be held at the ACA camp at Lake Sebago in Harriman State Park. It’s around 1 hour and 30 minutes from NYC. To arrange transportation, please email cabin@nbcboathouse.org if :

  • (1) you are looking for a ride, or
  • (2) if you plan to drive and you have space in your vehicle to take other people.

If you are interested in staying at our cabin over that weekend we are giving priority to all event attendees.  Please email us if you are interested. You are welcome to stay Friday and Saturday night, or Saturday night only.

ACA MEMBERSHIP

The ACA camp is reserved for members of the American Canoe Association. We highly recommend you join or renew your membership if it has lapsed. Membership is $40 per year.   If you have never visited Sebago before it is possible to attend as a guest, so long as another NBCB member who is also a member of the ACA signs you in.  Please note that guests pay $20 for the day use fee, rather than $10 for members.
