KAYAK: Assessment for Intermediate/Beginner

  • Registering as a Kayak Paddler. Make sure you've been assessed for the skill level of this trip before registering.

Assessment for Intermediate/Beginner

Assessment Test for beginners who have learned the skills to safely go on Intermediate paddles, or for experienced kayakers new to the boathouse. We'll do the usual canoe shuttle and then paddle to Hallets Cove where all can demonstrate their paddle skills. 

You must be able to do ALL of the following:

  • Set up your own boat & gear including spray skirt, paddle and foot pegs

  • Get in and out of the kayak unassisted

  • Demonstrate a wet exit on land or preferably in the water

  • Understand skegs and rudders

  • Perform forward and reverse strokes, turns, and a stop in three strokes

  • Draw and ruddering strokes

  • Paddle at a moderate pace for at least 60 minutes without a break

  • Skill level: Intermediate(see what this means here)
  • Meet:  5:00 PM/ sharp at Manhattan Avenue Street-End Park
  • Launch Kayaks: 5:30 PM
  • Slack: 6:30 PM and the Ebb begins
  • Return: 8:00PM
  • Release: 8:45 PM

Dress to get wet, bring water, a snack, etc. Avoid jeans or other heavy cotton clothing.
