North Brooklyn Community Boathouse is holding a fire making workshop at our camp at Lake Sebago in Harriman State Park on Saturday 8th October. The event will be open to all club members, and members of the American Canoe Association visiting Lake Sebago.

Fire making is an essential outdoor skill that we use to stay warm, create light or a rescue signal, cook food, and purify water. Knowing how to create a fire successfully in all conditions will improve both safety and comfort for any people who spend time outdoors.

During the session we will discuss the theory of fire craft, including the stages of fire building, as well as learning how to make fire without matches or a lighter, including finding local materials around the camp that can be used to make fire, such as tinder and quartzite rocks.

This session is ideal for Adults and older children.  Children under 12 will also enjoy the class, but they must be accompanied by an adult.

The class will be about 2 hours long. Registration is appreciated so we can plan for the number of attendees.

Session Lead: Jens Rasmussen

October is a great time of year to visit Lake Sebago as the temperatures cool down and the leaves start to change color. The club’s canoes and kayaks will be available to use all day for members with previous paddling experience, so why not come for the day and explore the lake.

For those who don’t have their own transport, people will be driving from the city, please reach out to alancastles@gmail.com if you are interested in getting a lift.  If you prefer to catch public transport, we can also organise to shuttle folks from Sloatsburg station which is 15 minutes drive from the Camp.
