NBCB is thrilled to present a series of four workshops with Anaya Lambert and Olivier Adrien of Project Canoe  on antiracist principles and how they interact with paddlesports and our local community.

As part of ongoing work to enact the principles expressed in NBCB's statement on Black Lives Matter, these workshops are presented for all NBCB members in leadership positions, and we hope to be able to include more general membership as well.

This workshop series will take place over Zoom on four evenings this summer:

  • Monday, July 26, 6:30-8:30 PM
  • Monday, August 9, 6:30-8:30 PM
  • Monday, August 23, 6:30-8:30 PM
  • Wednesday, September 15, 6:30-8:30 PM

Workshop #1 (of 4):

In this 2 hour zoom workshop we will explore the history of colonialism, extraction and power dynamics in the outdoor recreation industry as it manifests in the 'Brooklyn' area. This workshop is the first in a series of 4.

What you will learn:

- The subtleties and nuances of racial power dynamics as they manifest in outdoor natural spaces.

- Improved Racial literacy, and greater ease (less apprehension) speaking about the origins and ongoing issues of racism.

- Have an increased ability to contribute to an equitable future through better understanding the past.

- Take a geographically local look at inequity, past and present.

- Learn current social justice definitions and terminology so that you can have meaningful conversations with protestors, activists, community members etc.

This workshop is a hybrid presentation including interactive activities, breakout rooms and a Q&A to support transformative dialogue. A post workshop survey will be circulated to enhance your learning experience. This workshop will be recorded! Conversations during breakout rooms will NOT be recorded to support confidentiality and participant safety, however all conversations in the main presentation room will be recorded.

*Please note: The workshop recording will be made available to your management team and may be utilized by them in the future as an onboarding/training tool for new Boathouse members. If you have any questions about who will see this recording please consult with your management team to ensure this event meets your accessibility and privacy needs.
