Trip Planning: Theory & Practice

A Zoom link will be sent to registrants on the day of the event.

90 minutes with a brief break about midway between the two topics.

Join us whether you're an Official Paddler* looking to refresh your knowledge, working toward Official Paddler assessment, or just interested in upping your local nautical know-how.  Even if you never intend on setting foot in a boat (which... just... why?), this is a great opportunity to learn more about one of the most unique waterways on Earth!

The East River is a tidal strait with fast and  dangerous currents.  And if that isn't intimidating enough, it literally changes direction, like some sort of super-river from a sci-fi movie.  Did I scare you?  Don't be scared!  By learning how these currents work and what it means for planning kayak and canoe trips, paddling in the East River can be a fun and rewarding experience!  Okay but how can I learn enough about the currents to safely paddle in the East River?  By signing up for this class, silly!

Part 1:  We'll learn about tides and tidal currents, with a special focus on those in our area. Discussion on how moon phases and even the weather can affect currents. Using the 50-90 rule, understanding various charts, apps, and lingo.

Part 2:  We'll actually plan trips, troubleshoot different locations and conditions. I'll try to stump you with difficult dates & times.

By the end of the class, not only will you be able to plan trips, you'll also be able to annoy your coworkers by casually looking at your watch and saying, "Hm, the river's ebbing." (Seriously my boss is starting to get pretty annoyed with me for leaving work early "because slack's a bit early today.")

This class is part of a series intended to help NBBC members achieve their Official Paddler assessment.  The full list of classes includes:

  • Marine Radio & Weather for Paddlers
  • Trip Planning Theory & Practice (this one!)
  • Nautical Rules of the Road & Local Knowledge
  • Nautical Knots for Paddlers
Look forward to additional event announcements for the rest of the series!

Taught by Jeff with emotional and content support from Monica
