This is a class to hone and practice your marine radio skills. It is one thing to sit on land and leisurely practice making proper radio calls. It's another to have to wrestle it out of your life jacket, paddle in hand, currents and wakes tossing you about while you recall proper terminology.
NOTE: DO NOT press the TALK button during our practice, instead we will loudly speak the radio call for the group to hear.
We'll go out on Newtown Creek, review radio use and then take turns "speaking & making calls" (radios off) while paddling against the current to Anable Basin or the 59th Street Bridge.
We will rehearse possible pretend scenarios, such as calling a tour boat captain headed toward you , a ferry backing out of the slip while currents carry you past it , asking captains their course intentions, security calls, emergency calls, etc.
